Why we wear Helmets
< ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
Sunday, January 7, 2007... You could call this page one of the harder lessons of the "Daddy Diaries".

I'm creating this page after 4 hours at the E-R at St. Mary's in Apple Valley/Victorville.

At around 2:15PM my 8-year old, Alex was riding his bike down our street. He had just zoomed past me and my 4 year old way too fast. I said to him "Car!" as I noticed one of our neighbors might be leaving his drive way, but Alex didn't hear me.

Thankfully the car did not pull onto the street, but unfortunately for my son, the ride went wrong. Within a split second he began a front wheel wobble and lost control of his bike at top speed. On a kid his size at 88 pounds at around 10MPH+ it was an instant "end over" crash. My poor buddy didn't slide at all. It was an instant slam over the handlebars into the pavement FACE FIRST.

Thank God he was wearing a helmet.
I preach about helmets to my kids all the time. My brother taught me when I was a kid that "you can break an arm and fix it, but you can't break a brain" -I live by that rule and have taught it to my kids.

The helmet may have saved his life.
Every parents nightmare, your child in the hospital
You can see the line of the helmet on Alex's hairline...

The helmet for it's part, did not fare so well... BUT it did it's job!
The impact CRACKED and compressed the padding!
Alex's biggest complaint was his right hand experienced finger numbness... Thankfully NO BONES BROKEN.
Alex displays the war wounds. 4 hours in the E-R and some wound scrubbing and he's going to be just fine... a tad bit sore for a few days for sure.
PARENTS: Next time your kid says they don't need to wear a helmet, show them this page or tell them about our experience.
